The handsome brick villas west of Greenwich Park were built in the early C19 as part of the expansion of the suburbs. Building on the steep slope of Telegraph Hill meant that many houses ended up with half-basements under the front room, with small kitchens at a lower level opening onto gardens. Here in one such house, a spacious semi-detached Victorian villa, we identified and opened up the potential of the semi-basement, creating a large kitchen space opening into a family living area, and making the most of the basement with a utility room. The new living space on the lower level was connected to the house on the ground floor with a cut in the ground floor with a contemporary glass balcony.
